Nihongo help

Support

Get started with the iPhone app, practise Japanese, translate what you find, and link the Nihongo Chrome companion.

Get started on iPhone

  1. Join the free public beta through TestFlight.
  2. Install Nihongo, then enter your email address.
  3. Use the one-time code sent to that address to sign in.
  4. Choose Kana, Vocab, or Translate from the app navigation.

Nihongo uses passwordless sign-in, so there is no separate password to remember.

Study and practise

Kana

Open Kana to study hiragana or katakana. Choose a group or set of characters, then use study, recall, spelling, matching, audio, or writing practice. Your progress and recent sessions stay linked to your account.

Vocabulary and grammar

Open Vocab, choose a deck, and study the words or grammar in it. Practice can include recognition, matching, spelling, cloze, and pronunciation checks depending on the selected content and settings.

Offline access

Downloaded learning content remains available without a network connection. Translation, account sync, and pronunciation checks require internet access.

Translate Japanese

Use Translate to enter Japanese or English text. Nihongo returns the translation with readings, a phrase breakdown, and kanji details where available.

You can also choose an image from your library or take a photo for image translation. Recent app translations are kept separately from Chrome translations in History.

Use Nihongo for Chrome

Link your account

  1. Open Nihongo from the Chrome toolbar.
  2. In the signed-in iPhone app, open Profile → Chrome extension → Scan.
  3. Scan the QR code shown by the extension.
  4. Return to Chrome. The extension links automatically.

A QR code expires after five minutes. If it expires, the extension creates a new one.

Translate selected Japanese

Highlight a Japanese term or short phrase on a normal webpage, then press Translate. Nihongo opens a card beside your selection. Use the minus control to collapse it into an anchored chip, or press the chip to reopen it. Saved overlays return when you revisit the same page; close a card or chip to remove it. Keep selections to 240 characters or fewer.

Convert yen prices

Open the extension and choose Convert this page. Recognized yen prices become USD estimates. Hover a converted price to see its original yen value.

Troubleshooting

A sign-in code did not arrive

Check that the email address is correct, look in spam or junk, and wait for the resend timer before requesting another code.

Practice or progress did not sync

Confirm that you are online and signed into the expected account. Reopen the section after the connection returns.

A translation failed

Check your connection and try a shorter text selection or a smaller, clear image. Chrome translation also requires a linked account and a normal HTTP or HTTPS webpage.

The extension cannot run on this page

Chrome blocks extensions on browser settings pages, the Chrome Web Store, and some other protected pages. Open a regular webpage and try again.

A price was not converted

Nihongo intentionally ignores ambiguous numbers. The amount should include a clear yen marker such as ¥, ¥, 円, or JPY and appear in Japanese-price context.

Contact support

Include the device or browser, what you expected, what happened, and the app or extension version. Do not send passwords, one-time codes, or account credentials.
